Editor’s Note

The need for interaction among anthropologists has brought about the organization of the UGNAYANG PANG-AGHAMTAO (UGAT), INC. This association of students, teachers and workers in anthropology in the Philippines aims to: a) promote, develop, and disseminate anthropological knowledge; b) promote and deepen the knowledge, understanding and participation of among different ethno-linguistic groups working towards an integrated national consciousness and development; and c) promote and forge linkages among anthropologists and those doing related work within the country and other parts of the world. In the pursuit of these objectives, UGAT held its First National Conference at the University of the Philippines at Los Baños from April 14 to 16, 1978 with the combined assistance of the Philippine Council for Agriculture and Resources Research, the Philippine Social Science Council, and Mindanao State University. This conference, which had “Philippine Anthropology Today” as its theme, was specifically organized with end in view of assessing what has been done so far in the field of anthropology.

The papers read during the conference were divided into two main concerns: Teaching and Research. For the session on Teaching, Jules de Raedt of University of the Philippines-Baguio read a paper on Social Anthropology and Jerome Bailen of University of the Philippines-Diliman on Physical Anthropology. The bulk of the conference papers were on anthropological research with Israel Cabanilla of University of the Philippines-Diliman reading a paper on Archaeology, Francisco Datar of University of the Philippines-Diliman on Physical Anthropology, Jonathan Malicsi of University of the Philippines-Diliman on Ethno-Linguistics, E. Arsenio Manuel of University of the Philippines on Philippine Ethnography, Celia Antonio of University of the Philippines-Diliman on the Lowland Group, Juan Francisco of the Philippine-American Educational Foundation on the Muslims, June Prill-Brett of University of the Philippines-Baguio on the Cordillera, Jesucita Sodusta of University of the Philippines-Diliman on Ecology, Francisco Demetrio of Xavier University on Folklore, Leticia Lagmay of University of the Philippines-Diliman on Culture and Personality, Mariflor Parpan-Pagusara of the Institute of Philippine Culture on Applied Anthropology, Carlos Fernandez of the Development Academy of the Philippines on Ethnic Relations, and Prospero Covar of University of the Philippines-Diliman on Religion.

Some of these papers are reproduces in the maiden issue of AGHAM-TAO, the official publication of the Ugnayang Pang-Aghamtao, Inc. Unfortunately, not all the speakers were able to submit copies of their papers before press time.

Publication of this issue has been made possible through the assistance of the Philippine Council for Agriculture and Resources Research and for this we are very grateful.

The cover design was executed by Ricardo Tamayo of University of the Philippines-Diliman and depicts Anthropology as a ‘mirror for man.’
